Sound quality for low frequency sounds

Sound quality for low frequency sounds
The sound frequencies of a cat purr range from 25Hz to 150Hz. Most small speakers only reliably
replicate sounds above 200Hz.

The main challenge we faced in accurately reproducing low frequency sound in a small, portable device was that the lower frequencies would be missing. When we were designing the Purrfy, from the concept through prototyping and production, we had the primary goal of reproducing these low frequencies. Without the low frequencies, the Purrfy’s purrs wouldn’t be authentic.

We conducted extensive tests on a wide variety of audio speakers. This led to many failures and
discarded prototypes, until we finally found a model that matched our desired characteristics.

The Purrfy speaker is linked to a low-frequency sound radiator in an air-tight chamber. The Purrfy’s enclosure is actually a sealed chamber with a powered speaker and a passive radiator. The speaker’s movement creates internal air pressure changes that also move the passive radiator. This movement generates much lower frequency responses and increases Purrfy’s overall output. The results are deeper, tighter bass output and better efficiency at making high-quality sound. This arrangement adds to the efficacy of the low-frequency sound waves.

The Purrfy’s audio circuitry has also been optimized for the low-frequency ranges. This drives the
haptic devices that cause the mechanical vibrations. We selected a specific model of haptic exciters because of its efficiency in the low-frequency spectrum. There are cheaper exciters available, but those models don’t have the required response in the target frequency range.

Easy to use. Easy to love.

Backed by Research

Calm your mind. Relax. Focus. Sleep better.

The invention of Purrfy developed from a question – does a cat’s purr really have healing qualities?

The team behind Purrfy did a deep investigation into the science of a cat’s purr from a wide variety of perspectives, searching through academic findings in veterinary medicine, kinesiology, biology, audio therapies, zoology, and physiotherapy to find out what researchers had to say on the qualities of a cat’s purr. While feline assisted therapy is a relatively new area of research, researchers in Poland found that “Contact with a cat can contribute to the treatment of many diseases, including depression (anxiety and fear), arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, AIDS, ADHD, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, progressive muscular atrophy (muscular dystrophy), sclerosis, loss of sight and hearing, mental illness, osteoporosis and autism. Feline-assisted therapy may be conducted in nursing homes, prisons, hospices, hospitals, kindergartens and schools…

Conclusions: Feline-assisted therapy can be used in a variety of settings, and it is gaining increased popularity. Cat-assisted therapy is particularly recommended for patients who are unable to interact with large animals such as horses or are afraid of dogs.”

Humans generally report that listening to a cat’s purr creates feelings of calm and relaxation. Additionally, research has shown that a pet can help to reduce stress and blood pressure, which has positive impacts on reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A pet can also help to reduce response levels and lower anxiety.

But does a cat’s purr heal? Research indicates that low frequencies, similar to the frequency of cat purrs, can positively impact the speed of fracture healing and bone strength. Studies suggest that the vibrations from purring have a positive impact on mental health, feelings of calmness, reducing anxiety, and on bone and tissue health for humans.

Fun Facts of the Science of Purring:

  • Even though they are in the same family (Felidae) not all species of cats purr – bobcats, cougars, ocelots, domestic and feral cats, and lynxes can purr, but tigers, lions, and leopards do not.
  • When cats purr, they do so while breathing in and out – the purr is not related to the mechanics of breathing
  • Kittens start to purr very early on, within a couple of days of birth. It is not known if kittens learn to purr or if it is innate behavior, but mother cats frequently purr while they are nursing their kittens
  • Scientists cannot definitively say why cats purr, and why other species do not
  • Purring requires a very specific bone structure to create resonance and sound
  • Researchers from Austria, Switzerland and Czechia studied the larynges of domestic cats and found ‘pads’ within their vocal chords, which add an extra layer of fatty tissue and allow them to vibrate at low frequencies – producing the classic purring sound
  • Domestic cats purr at a frequency of about 25 hertz (25 cycles per second)
  • Cats aren’t the only animals who purr – civets, mongooses, and genets (Viverridae family) can also create a purr
  • The ability to purr does not change with the age of a cat – cats of any age can purr

Caring for the Purrfy

If your Purrfy is misbehaving

Erratic behaviour can be caused by low battery charge. Charge the battery for three or four hours, and then try again.

If the problem persists, press the power button, and hold it down for about 10 seconds. This will force the Purrfy to fully reset.

If your Purrfy needs cleaning

You can use a damp cloth to wipe down the Purrfy.

If your Purrfy requires a more thorough clean, the outer silicone skin can be washed with mild detergent, or it can be cleaned in the top shelf of your dishwasher.

  • remove the outer silicone skin
  • place the outer silicone skin in the top shelf of the dishwasher

Caution

Make sure that only the outer silicone skin gets wet. The main body of the Purrfy must never be exposed to any liquid.
